Nothing is right
9 Graphics, 2001 - 2007
It was the early 2000s, and medicine dominated Marion Avanzini’s daily routine – but art still called vehemently for time and attention. “Nothing is Right” emerged during long nights, with music as an ever-present influence, and marked the beginning of a tense balancing act between art and medicine. Galerie Ariadne’s discovery of these works led to Marion Avanzini’s first exhibition.
2.
Appropriate
10 Graphics, 2005
This series responds to a text by Ingeborg Bachmann, The Truth is Appropriate for People. Alongside large-canvas oil paintings, the series comprises drawings with dominant red and blue tones, containing inscribed pieces of mirrored text from works by Bachmann, Friederike Mayröcker and N. C. Kaser. They invite the viewer to confront the complex nature of truth.

Short Cuts
16 Graphics, 2009 - 2017
Apprehending the essence of a moment and capturing it in a drawing: Avanzini has produced Short Cuts continuously for almost 20 years. They are visual notes or “minute-pics” on a 20cm x 20cm format. Inscribed quotations from poetry or music, the text mirrored, add depth to these works – or snapshots – created at home or while travelling.
4.
Recurring Thoughts
17 Graphics, 2009
Cardiac catheter procedures, acute treatment of blocked blood vessels, cardiac MRI scans – all were restricting the time available for art. Images accompanying recurring thoughts about the complexity of human experience kept forming in Avanzini’s mind, as visual metaphors: crossroads, congested spaces and dead ends.

Graphical Diary
36 Graphics, 2011 - 2025
Commenced in 2005 in New York, with no end in sight. Instead of putting into words experiences, sights seen, and thoughts, spontaneous drawings using pencil and oil sticks capture external impressions and internal reflections. The graphical diary became a projection screen for creativity, whether in foreign cities, at home, in uninhabited landscapes or interior worlds.
6.
Nowhere
23 Graphics, 2010 - 2019
Using oil sticks and graphite, these drawings (some in large format) reflect partings, decisions, internal upheavals and entering new spaces. With intense lines and deep layers of colour, the series “Nowhere” calls attention to a feeling of floating between places and decisions, as an artistic exploration of uncertainty in a time of change.

Escape to the North
7 Graphics, 2023
Leaving medicine after unbroken years of practice, Avanzini set off to Europe’s far north. Unendingly vast landscapes, the northern lights, and the bone-chilling Arctic cold did not only expand the artist’s horizons: radiant yellows, greens and oranges complement familiar red and blue tones in her drawings. And alongside oil sticks and pencil, Avanzini began using oil pastels and fibre tip pens.
8.
Latein America
33 Graphics, 2023- 2024
Six months in Latin America including Colombia, Argentina and Chile. From the Día de los Muertos in Mexico to Guatemala’s active volcanoes, the works reflect stunning landscapes and experiences as well as crushing poverty and migration movements. Using oil sticks and pens, the pictures seek to capture the the complex reality of the region with bright colours and dynamic lines.

It will never be the way it was
26 Graphics, 2020 - 2025
This series, comprising oil paintings and drawings, came together during and after the Corona pandemic – a time defined by radical changes. The title, inspired by a song by the band AnnenMayKantereit, is meant to recall the feeling of irreversible change. The works deal with the irrevocable transformation of the familiar, and illustrate the rupture between “then” and “now”.
